Recent research has shown that juices and extracts from the NZ Blackadder variety of blackcurrant contains Mono-amine Oxidase Inhibitors (MAOI’s) which is why it is thought to be useful in protecting and supporting healthy brain function. But these same inhibitors (found in some anti-depressants) can interfere with certain medications so people being treated for conditions such as Parkinson’s or depression should consult their medical professional before consuming any Blackadder variety blackcurrant juices or extracts. Sujon Berryfruits Frozen blackcurrant berries and Blackcurrant Powders contain no Blackadder juice or by-product. Sujon uses only NZ-grown Ben Ard blackcurrants in its product range but Sujon Berryfruits does recommend that if you are on any MAOI medication the safest approach is to avoid taking any blackcurrant product until you have discussed the matter with your medical professional.

  • Sujon was the pioneer of national frozen berry production and marketing in NZ. Sourcing and producing best-berries will always be our core business so we were thrilled that: Sujon is the Number One NZ retail frozen fruit brand in NZ supermarkets (Source: Aztec MAT NZ retail statistics July 2016).
  • The team at Sujon Berryfruits pioneered the world’s first research into the use of blackcurrants for sports stamina and sport recovery. Over the years that pioneering research has resulted in some amazing research being done by top world scientists in their fields. This year Professor Mark Willems and his team in the UK had their research on sports recovery using NZ blackcurrants published in ‘The Sport and Exercise Scientist’ (Full research paper here). Professor Willems and Sujon Berryfruits have worked together on a number of projects; in 2015 Prof Willems came to Nelson to visit the team that started the global “blackcurrant-sport research concept” and review his work with us. Expect more blackcurrant research to be published in 2017.
  • With all these things happening, we realised we needed help to capture the potential of our work to date and continue to create jobs for our staff and increased market opportunities for our growers. And so, this year, we were thrilled to have Bob Major join the company as Chairman and John Molyneux as CEO. Bob has an amazing background as Chairman or Director for a number of highly entrepreneurial NZ exporting companies and John Molyneux as a very successful consultant for high-tech R&D for food producer groups. The depth of knowledge these two bring to our team means we really can continue our goal to be a world leader in creating global demand for New Zealand berry-based consumer products.
