Time is tight and especially at this time of year you don’t want to get up too early as it’s just too cold! I always like to start the day as best I can, which starts with the best food. So here is how I have been doing it for ages and it works great for me! I tend to not have this smoothie every day but rather when I’m exercising… I do a lot of climbing so it’s great for muscle recovery. I also find that with the protein powder it really fills you up so you’re not constantly looking for that next snack. I put the brazil nuts in because New Zealand’s soil lacks in selenium, so we must get it from somewhere!

Ingredients

1 cup of Rice Milk
1 Tbsp. Ginger- cut up
3 Tbsp. of natural whey protein powder (I get 1kg of ‘Red8’ from  www.healthy.co.nz)
3 Brazil Nuts
1 Banana
2 Tbsp. of Easy-yo natural yogurt
1 Tsp. of Sujon Blackcurrant Powder

Put it all in a blender, pour into your travel mug and you’re away!

Have a great day 🙂

-Making the Most of the Best Berries In The World!

New Zealand chefs, caterers and bakers are amongst the best and most innovative in the world; always looking for new innovations and exciting new food ideas.

Some New and Classic Berry Ideas from the team at Sujon®

Smoothies-
Berries adds both a spritzy zing and beautiful colour. If a health focus is your thing: berries are a must!

And the frozen berries help keep the Smoothie cool in more ways than one.

Fruit Salad-
A sprinkle of berries adds magic to any fruit salad mix: bright purples, blues, blacks and or reds to create visual excitement.

Green Salads too!
Berries don’t have to start at dessert: with their cleansing acid-sweet bite and brilliant colours they work wonderfully well with green salads and especially with salty cheeses.

An exceptionally versatile summer salsa.

Salsas-
Latin American salsas (chopped uncooked ‘sauces’) go great with NZ casual cuisine: try one of the Sujon berry varieties with finely diced red onions and chopped mint, skinned seeded tomatoes and balanced with caster sugar and white wine vinegar: Perfect with cold meat cuts and especially grilled meats of all types.

A delicious treat!

Muffins
Berries and Chocolate is the new magic-Muffin ‘mix’. Try low-acid berries with white chocolate and tart berries with dark chocolate.

Clafoutis

A baked pudding based on a simple pancake batter that’s made brilliant with berries! Fold frozen berries into the batter, bake and serve warm with cream or icecream. Great for a summer night: perfect for a light but warming winter dessert.

Cheeseboard Comfit
Berries simmered with citrus juice and thickened with a little arrowroot is the perfect cheeseboard partner: different berries with different cheeses: an amazing cheeseboard conversation piece!

This is so easy it’s embarrassing when people ask you for the recipe. It tastes creamy but it’s got no fat added and it tastes so good you can’t believe it’s good for you. It’s a superb breakfast drink or can be watered down more for a very relaxing non-alcoholic drink on a hot summers night. And it could be the ideal next-morning pick-you-up: Blackcurrants relax blood vessels in the body, and hangover headaches are caused by blood vessels tightening around the grey matter. So if you feel better you know why!

You need:
I cup Sujon Blackcurrants
1 cup chopped apple (leave skin on but take out the core)
1 cup apple juice
1 cup ice cubes
What to do:

– Add all to blender and blend for minute or so until creamy and no large fruit pieces left.
– Stir occasionally if it’s left sitting before drinking.
– Go for it!

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Nelson family business, Sujon Berries, know better than most the many health benefits of berries. Sujon have a number of projects around delivering those benefits to consumers and have released one of these products to consumers this week – Blackcurrant powder which aids muscle recovery by reducing muscle fatigue and the onset of soreness during and after exercise.

“New independent research suggests that SuJon New Zealand Blackcurrants are the Number One SuperFruit in the world, being the highest antioxidant cultivated berry” says Michelle Gibb, Marketing Manager of SuJon Berries. On the back of this research SuJon developed their blackcurrants into a concentrated form that’s 100% natural and still contains the goodness of real fruit. They are very excited to now have this product called SuJon Blackcurrant Powder available to the market.

Being a natural product Sujon didn’t want to encapsulate it; the experience is about drinking the goodness and feeling good. Their feedback from clients has been extremely positive – Kelly Muirden who has just summited Mount Cook in December 2009 said “The blackcurrant powder gave me the ability to train harder and longer for the climb… it helped me recover phenomenally quickly. I was stoked, following the climb that week I was out running, muscle fatigue was non-existent.” “We guarantee you will feel better after taking our Blackcurrant powder; so confident in fact, that I offer a personal guarantee that no matter what your situation is; being a high performance athlete, someone dealing with a debilitating disease or someone who exercises casually that if you don’t feel better within 7 days of taking this product I’ll give you your money back” says John Gibb, Director of SuJon Berries.

Sujon’s Blackcurrant powder comes in a convenient shelf stable foil pack. “Packaging was important to retain the nutritional and functional values of the fruit. After 18 months of development we have launched with a product that we know from personal experience works. Only a teaspoon a day is required unless training hard or during an event when for full results we recommend you take it before and immediately after exercise in place of the usual daily recommended dose” says Bryce Lukes, General Manager of SuJon Berries.

Computers, videogames and cell phones are the favoured communication conduits and recreational playgrounds of everyone from Gen X down. Wonderful technology but high usage can come with a price; known variously as visual eye fatigue or focus freezing (aka asthenopia)…
…And what could this have to do with kids eating blackcurrants?

Scientists in Japan, concerned with the growing prevalence of asthenopia, have carried out major research at the Nishikasai Inouye Eye Hospital. Clinical trials have established that taking New Zealand-grown Blackcurrants reduced asthenopia (the fixed focus that creates visual fatigue).
The active ingredient in the Blackcurrants is the purple-black group of antioxidants called anthocyanins and the trials gave each person the equivalent of 50mg of anthocyanins per dose. (Equivalent to the content of two dessertspoons of frozen berries or a juice concentrate equivalent.)

This means that providing school children with foods including Sujon Blackcurrants could have a beneficial effect on learning in areas of high computer use.

But we’re not suggesting caterers become pharmaceutical purveyors! Blackcurrants are a totally natural food and rightfully could be part of any 5+ a day diet regardless. But this research resonates well with the young people and it’s a colourful inducement for them to select a good food or drink over a less desirable one. A nice win-win all round.

Smoothies are a great way to deliver the anthocyanins in Sujon Blackcurrants.

If parents, menu planners, school dieticians or caterers want further advice on anthocyanin levels in Blackcurrants they can contact info@sujon.co.nz.
